Acyclovir Medications

Acyclovir is a prescription medication used as a genital herpes treatment, as well as a treatment for cold sores and herpes zoster shingles. It does not prevent or cure the disease that causes the sores, but does help relieve the pain and speed healing.

Acyclovir comes in two variations. A topical cream that is applied to the skin where sores are beginning or active is the most common form in use and comes in a small tube. There is also an oral medication, available in the form of a pill or a liquid, which is used to help prevent future outbreaks.

The oral medication is generally only used by those with severe cases of herpes, since there can be side effects.

Using Acyclovir

If you are using the cream as a treatment for cold sores or genital herpes sores, you should make sure the area is clean and dry before each application. Apply enough that the entire sore is well covered and gently rub it in. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly after each use to prevent spreading the infection.

This medication is most effective when you begin using it as soon as you feel a sore beginning, usually indicated by an itching or tingling sensation.

If you are taking the oral version of Acyclovir, make sure to carefully follow the dosing instructions. Do not take more or less than recommended, and be careful to follow the scheduled intervals. Continue to take the medication even if you feel that you are well, or you may experience a reoccurrence.

The liquid version does not need to be refrigerated, but should be shaken well before taking each dose.

Possible Side Effects

While side effects are not common, there are a few you may wish to be aware of. Some people taking Acyclovir reported headache or nausea, or a burning or stinging feeling where the cream is applied. These symptoms are generally mild and will go away on their own.
